Working with bone china clay combined with paper I make sculptural vessels which are each unique yet compliment each other as a series of works. Using a slipcasting technique the paper behaves as a strengthener enabling me to achieve an extremely fine shell of clay. Through controlled firing the forms become fluid and begin to slump and distort whilst in the kiln - as a result each piece has its own individual characteristics and shape.
Fascinated by the inherent qualities of bone china, I make simple yet considerd forms that explore the behaviour of the material, examining its translucency and clarity to create tactile and sensual pieces. The forms have a quiet contemplative quality, particularly when viewed as groups or installations.
Each piece is fired up to three times to 1250oc and is hand finished by diamond polishing to achieve an extremely smooth, matt surface.
