Ruth - Wood turner - Isle of Arran

The timbers that Ruth works with for bowls are principally Scottish hardwoods. She tries to source all her woods from
naturally felled or sustainable sources. Some of these are turned when the wood is seasoned; at other times she uses
freshly felled unseasoned timber particularly when she wants to make delicate, thin walled bowls which may take an oval or irregular form in the drying.

Ruth produces clean lines and graceful but strong shapes. In her designs she likes to create a contrast of texture, adding definition by using grooving, texturing and colouring using the naturally occurring tannin in certain timbers (eg. ebonizing oak creats a dense blue/black)

The pieces she makes from unseasoned timber cannot be reproduced exactly and are therefore one off pieces although similar pieces can be made.
